Became, was, elected: the instrumental

After став (became), був (was) and обра́ли (elected), the role is usually in the instrumental: -ом for masculine nouns like капіта́н (-ем after a soft consonant, as in лі́карем), -ою for feminine nouns in -а.

  • В Іта́лії Андрі́й шви́дко став зі́ркою. In Italy, Andriy quickly became a star.
  • Він був капіта́ном кома́нди на чемпіона́ті сві́ту 2006 ро́ку. He was the team's captain at the 2006 World Cup.

  • Він народи́вся 29 ве́ресня 1976 ро́ку в селі́ Двіркі́вщина на Ки́ївщині. He was born on 29 September 1976 in the village of Dvirkivshchyna in the Kyiv region.

Age in the dative

Age is said with the dative: the person whose age it is goes into the dative. In the past, add було́. Андрі́єві is the dative of Андрі́й; Андрі́ю is also correct.

  • Коли́ Андрі́єві було́ три ро́ки, його́ сім’я́ переї́хала до Ки́єва, на Оболо́нь. When Andriy was three, his family moved to Kyiv, to Obolon.

Two aspects in the past

Most verbs in the text are perfective: заби́в, ви́грав and став tell of one finished event or result. Some are imperfective, such as грав, гра́ла and очо́лював: they describe a situation that went on for some time.

  • Шевче́нко до́вго грав і за збі́рну Украї́ни. Shevchenko also played for the Ukrainian national team for a long time.
  • Пізні́ше він став тре́нером і в 2016–2021 роках очо́лював збі́рну Украї́ни. Later he became a coach, and from 2016 to 2021 he led the Ukrainian national team.
  • …і са́ме Шевче́нко заби́в виріша́льний пена́льті у фіна́лі. …and it was Shevchenko who scored the decisive penalty in the final.
