Numbers

The cardinal numbers, the form of the noun after 1, after 2 to 4 and after 5 and above, the case forms of один, два, три, чотири and п’ять, and numbers in prices and ages.

Read first:

After this page you will be able to count in Ukrainian and put the noun after a number in the right form: оди́н до́лар, два до́лари, п’ять до́ларів. You will know which numbers change for gender, how оди́н, два, три, чоти́ри and п’ять change for case, and how to say prices and ages.

You have met the basic rule on the shopping page and on the genitive page. This page brings it together and goes a step further. Numbers that say how many are cardinal numbers (кі́лькісні числі́вники). Numbers that give a position, such as first and second, are ordinal numbers; they have their own page.

Larger numbers are built as in English, one word after another: два́дцять оди́н (21), сто п’ятдеся́т чоти́ри (154) [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]. The parts are written as separate words: ти́сяча п’ятсо́т, три́дцять ві́сім. Numbers such as одина́дцять, п’ятдеся́т and три́ста are one word [src: pravopys-2026, §38].

Ти́сяча (thousand), мільйо́н (million) and мілья́рд (billion) behave like nouns and change their endings like other nouns [src: pravopys-2026, §105; ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]. So they follow the rule for nouns after numbers, below: дві ти́сячі, п’ять ти́сяч.

One and two change for gender

Only one and two (and півтора́ / півтори́, below) have different forms for the gender of the noun [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8; pravopys-2026, §105]:

One and two with each gender
MasculineFeminineNeuter
oneоди́н до́лародна́ гри́вняодне́ я́блуко
twoдва до́ларидві гри́внідва я́блука
  • Оди́н, одна́, одне́ agree like an adjective. The neuter also has the less common form одно́ [src: pravopys-2026, §105].
  • Два goes with masculine and neuter nouns, дві with feminine nouns.
  • Три, чоти́ри and all the other numbers have one form for every gender.

The noun after a number

The form of the noun depends on the last word of the number [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]:

  • After 1: the nominative singular.
  • After 2, 3, 4: the nominative plural.
  • After 5 and above, including 11 to 14: the genitive plural.
Nouns after numbers

So the deciding word is the last one you say. Со́рок три гри́вні (43) ends in three, so it takes the nominative plural. П’ятна́дцять гри́вень (15) is one word, and it is not 2, 3 or 4, so it takes the genitive plural [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8].

Masculine nouns after два, три and чоти́ри take the plural endings -и or -і: два хло́пці, три робітники́, чоти́ри слухачі́ [src: pravopys-2026, §88, note 1]. The noun plurals page shows how these plurals are formed, and the genitive page shows the genitive plural.

Counting things

У ме́не оди́н брат і одна́ сестра́.
I have one brother and one sister.
У гру́пі два́дцять два студе́нти.
There are twenty-two students in the group.
Ends in два: nominative plural.
У гру́пі двана́дцять студе́нтів.
There are twelve students in the group.
12 is one word, not 2: genitive plural.
Я купи́ла три квитки́.
I bought three tickets.
Said by a woman.
Ми чека́ли со́рок хвили́н.
We waited forty minutes.
До Ки́єва п’ятсо́т кіломе́трів.
It is five hundred kilometres to Kyiv.

Thousands and millions

Ти́сяча is a feminine noun in -а, so it takes дві and changes like other feminine nouns in -а. Мільйо́н is masculine. The thing you count then goes into the genitive plural, after the word for thousand or million.

1,000ти́сяча гри́вень
2,000дві ти́сячі гри́вень
5,000п’ять ти́сяч гри́вень

Numbers in other cases

The rule above is for the nominative, and for the accusative of things. A number can also stand in another case, for example after a preposition. Then the number changes its form too. Learners mostly need the forms below; the orthography gives the full tables [src: pravopys-2026, §105].

Один

Оди́н changes like an adjective and agrees with its noun in gender and case.

Оди́н, одна́, одне́

Nominativeоди́нодна́одне́
Genitiveодного́одніє́їодного́
Dativeодному́одні́йодному́
Accusativeоди́н or одного́одну́одне́
Instrumentalодни́модніє́юодни́м
Locative(в) одному́, одні́м(в) одні́й(в) одному́, одні́м

These are the forms and stresses of the orthography’s table [src: pravopys-2026, §105]. The accusative masculine is одного́ with people and animals, and оди́н with things, as for adjectives. The orthography also lists less common feminine forms such as одно́ї. In phrases like one another (оди́н до одного, оди́н одному), the orthography puts the stress on the first syllable [src: pravopys-2026, §105, note]. The dictionary gives other stresses for these forms, so they are shown here without a mark [src: goroh-dictionary].

Два, три, чотири

Locative(у) двох(у) трьох(у) чотирьо́х

In the other cases, два and дві have the same forms. For the accusative, the orthography says “the same as the nominative or the genitive” [src: pravopys-2026, §105]. As with masculine nouns on the accusative page, the nominative form goes with things (ба́чу два буди́нки, I see two houses) and the genitive form with people and animals (ба́чу двох студе́нтів, I see two students).

П’ять and above

From five up, the numbers follow one pattern. Most cases have two forms, and both are correct [src: pravopys-2026, §105]:

П’ять (the same pattern for 6 to 20 and 30)
CaseForm
Nominativeп’ять
Genitiveп’яти́, п’ятьо́х
Dativeп’яти́, п’ятьо́м
Accusativeп’ять or п’ятьо́х
Instrumentalп’ятьма́, п’ятьома́
Locative(на) п’яти́, п’ятьо́х

The numbers from шість to два́дцять, and три́дцять, change in the same way. Шість, сім and ві́сім change their stem: шести́, семи́, восьми́; the instrumental of сім and ві́сім can also be сьома́, вісьма́ [src: pravopys-2026, §105].

Three numbers are simpler. Со́рок, дев’яно́сто and сто have a single ending -а in every case except the nominative and accusative: сорока́, дев’яно́ста, ста [src: pravopys-2026, §105].

In a long number, every part changes [src: pravopys-2026, §105].

Numbers after prepositions

Я прийшо́в із двома́ дру́зями.
I came with two friends.
Said by a man. з + instrumental: двома́ дру́зями.
Магази́н працю́є до п’яти́.
The shop is open until five.
до + genitive.
Ми були́ в трьох міста́х.
We were in three cities.
в + locative: both words change.
Ремо́нт коштує до п’яти́ ти́сяч гри́вень.
The repair costs up to five thousand hryvnias.
до + genitive: п’яти́ ти́сяч.
Прийшло́ бли́зько тридцяти́ студе́нтів.
About thirty students came.
бли́зько + genitive: тридцяти́.

Half: пів and півтора

  • Пів means half. The noun after it is in the genitive singular, and пів is written as a separate word: пів годи́ни (half an hour), пів я́блука (half an apple) [src: pravopys-2026, §36, note].
  • Півтора́ (one and a half) goes with masculine and neuter nouns, півтори́ with feminine nouns. They never change their form, and the noun after them is in the genitive singular: півтора́ кілогра́ма, півтори́ гри́вні [src: pravopys-2026, §107].

The usage guides mark півтора́ роки as an error: the correct form is півтора́ ро́ку (a year and a half) [src: goroh-usage].

Prices

A price is a number and гри́вня (hryvnia), the Ukrainian currency, with копі́йка (kopiyka, a hundredth of a hryvnia) for the change [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]. Both are feminine, so they take одна́ and дві.

Гри́вня and копі́йка after numbers
гри́внякопі́йка
1, 21, 31 …гри́внякопі́йка
2–4, 22–24 …гри́внікопі́йки
5–20, 25–30 …гри́венькопійо́к

After the verb коштувати (to cost) and after за (for), the price is in the accusative. One with a feminine noun changes: одна́ гри́вня becomes одну́ гри́вню. Ти́сяча changes like a noun: коштує ти́сячу гри́вень. The other numbers stay as they are [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8; pravopys-2026, §105].

Prices

Ка́ва коштує со́рок п’ять гри́вень.
A coffee costs forty-five hryvnias.
коштує is shown without a stress mark: the dictionary accepts two stresses.
Квито́к коштує одну́ гри́вню.
A ticket costs one hryvnia.
Accusative: одну́ гри́вню.
Я купи́в ці кві́ти за сто три́дцять дві гри́вні.
I bought these flowers for a hundred and thirty-two hryvnias.
Said by a man. Ends in дві: nominative plural.
Це коштує дві ти́сячі гри́вень.
It costs two thousand hryvnias.

In everyday speech, the words for hryvnias and kopiykas are often left out, especially when the price has both. Одина́дцять три́дцять п’ять means 11 hryvnias 35 kopiykas [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]. Shopping has more phrases for paying.

Ages

Ukrainian gives a person’s age with the dative and the word рік (year): literally, “to me are twenty years”. The dative page explains the pattern. Рік follows the same 1 / 2–4 / 5+ rule as every other noun [src: ukma-ukrainian-foreign-language, Lesson 8]:

Рік after numbers
NumberUkrainian
1, 21, 31 …оди́н рік, два́дцять оди́н рік
2–4, 22–24 …два роки, два́дцять три роки
5–20, 25–30 …п’ять років, двана́дцять років, два́дцять ві́сім років

Роки and років have no stress mark here, because the dictionary accepts two stresses for both [src: goroh-dictionary].

How old?

Скі́льки тобі́ років?
How old are you?
Informal: ти (тобі́).
Мені́ два́дцять оди́н рік.
I'm twenty-one.
Мої́й дочці́ чоти́ри роки.
My daughter is four.
дочці́: dative of дочка́.
Ді́дові сімдеся́т п’ять років.
Grandad is seventy-five.
ді́дові: dative of дід.

Common mistakes and limits

Common mistake

Letting the whole number decide. Only the last word counts. Say два́дцять дві гри́вні (22), not два́дцять дві гри́вень, and два́дцять оди́н рік (21), not два́дцять оди́н років.

Common mistake

Treating 12 to 14 like 2 to 4. Двана́дцять, трина́дцять and чотирна́дцять are single words, so the noun is in the genitive plural: двана́дцять гри́вень, not двана́дцять гри́вні.

Common mistake

The masculine form with a feminine noun. Say дві гри́вні, дві ти́сячі, not два гри́вні, два ти́сячі.

Common mistake

A plural after півтора́. Say півтора́ ро́ку, not півтора́ роки [src: goroh-usage].

Common mistake

Бі́льше with the genitive of a number. Usage guides recommend пона́д сто or більш ніж сто (more than a hundred), not бі́льше ста [src: goroh-usage].

Remember

Learn three forms of every noun you will count: оди́н до́лар, два до́лари, п’ять до́ларів. Then any number works: look at its last word.

Note

This page does not cover the collective numbers дво́є, тро́є, че́тверо and so on, or fractions such as одна́ тре́тя (one third). The orthography gives their forms [src: pravopys-2026, §105, §107]. Adjectives between a number and its noun (two new houses) also have their own rules, which are not covered here.

Practice

Audio

The example sentences on this page are read by a computer-generated voice (OpenAI text-to-speech). The recordings are not individually checked by a listener, and a computer voice can occasionally stress or pronounce a word wrongly: the written sentence, with its stress marks, is the reference. It is not a recording of a native speaker. Nothing is downloaded until you press a listen button.
