Grammar in this text

In the north, in the west: на + locative

The points of the compass take на: на пі́вночі (in the north), на пі́вдні, на схо́ді, на за́ході. An adjective in front agrees, in the locative: на півні́чному схо́ді, на півде́нному за́ході. З … на … gives a direction: з пі́вночі на пі́вдень, from north to south.

  • На пі́вночі — Білору́сь, на півні́чному схо́ді й схо́ді — Росі́я. To the north is Belarus, to the north-east and east Russia.
  • На за́ході краї́ни — Карпа́ти. In the west of the country are the Carpathians.

  • Чим да́лі на схід, тим суво́ріша зима́, а чим да́лі на пі́вдень, тим сухі́ша земля́. The further east you go, the harsher the winter, and the further south, the drier the land.

The largest, the highest: най-

Най- + comparative makes the superlative, and it agrees like any adjective: найбі́льша рі́чка (feminine), найбі́льше мі́сто (neuter), найви́ща гора́. Одна́ з найбі́льших краї́н means one of the largest countries: з + genitive plural.

  • Найбі́льша рі́чка Украї́ни — Дніпро́. The largest river in Ukraine is the Dnipro.
  • Тут є найви́ща гора́ Украї́ни — Гове́рла, 2061 метр. Here is the highest mountain in Ukraine, Hoverla, 2,061 metres.
  • Це одна́ з найбі́льших краї́н Євро́пи. It is one of the largest countries in Europe.

English translation

Ukraine lies in the east of Europe, on the northern shore of the Black Sea. It is one of the largest countries in Europe. Its capital is Kyiv, and its state language is Ukrainian. Ukraine became an independent state on 24 August 1991.

Ukraine borders seven countries. To the north is Belarus, to the north-east and east Russia. To the west are Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, and to the south-west Romania and Moldova. To the south, the country is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Most of Ukraine is a plain. In the west of the country are the Carpathians. Here is the highest mountain in Ukraine, Hoverla, 2,061 metres. The river Prut begins on its slopes.

From north to south, the natural landscape changes. In the north-west there are forests, further on lies the forest-steppe, and in the south and east, the steppe. In the steppe the black earth, chornozem, is very fertile. Most of this land is farmed, and wheat is grown here more than anything else. The further east you go, the harsher the winter, and the further south, the drier the land. On the shore of the Black Sea the climate is like that of the Mediterranean.

The largest river in Ukraine is the Dnipro. It flows from Russia and Belarus, and then through the centre of Ukraine to the south, to the Black Sea. Kyiv, the capital and the largest city in the country, stands on the banks of the Dnipro.

Ukraine has 24 oblasts. But people often talk about the historical regions too: Galicia with Lviv, Volhynia in the north-west, Transcarpathia, Bukovyna, Podillia, Polissia and Slobozhanshchyna (Slobidska Ukraine) with Kharkiv. These regions have different histories and different landscapes.
