The conditional

How to say "would" in Ukrainian with би or б and the past form, for wishes, polite requests and unreal conditions with якби, compared with real conditions with якщо.

Read first:

After this page you will be able to say would in Ukrainian: to express a wish (I would like…), to make a polite request, and to talk about things that are not real with якби́ (if I had time, I would go). You will know when to write би and when б, where the word goes in the sentence, and how a real condition with якщо́ differs.

How to form it

The conditional (умо́вний спо́сіб) is easy to build. Take the past form of the verb, which you know from the past tense, and add the little word би or б [src: goroh-dictionary]. The verb agrees in gender and number, exactly as in the past tense. Би itself never changes.

хоті́ти (to want): I would like…
SubjectUkrainianEnglish (rough)
I (a man)я хоті́в биI would like
I (a woman)я хоті́ла бI would like
you, informal (to a man)ти хоті́в биyou would like
you, informal (to a woman)ти хоті́ла бyou would like
he / she / itвін хоті́в би / вона́ хоті́ла б / воно́ хоті́ло бhe / she / it would like
weми хоті́ли бwe would like
you (formal or plural)ви хоті́ли бyou would like
theyвони́ хоті́ли бthey would like

The conditional has no tense of its own. The same form can refer to the present, the future or the past; the context decides.

Би or б?

The orthography gives a simple rule [src: pravopys-2026, §117]:

  • б after a word that ends in a vowel: я хоті́ла б, вона́ б сказа́ла;
  • би after a word that ends in a consonant: я хоті́в би, він би сказа́в.

The rule looks at the word just before the particle, whatever that word is. The particle би / б that forms the conditional is always written as a separate word [src: pravopys-2026, §44, §117]. Inside conjunctions such as якби́ and щоб it is part of the word (see below) [src: pravopys-2026, §43, §44].

Where би goes

Би usually comes straight after the verb, or after an earlier word in the sentence, often the subject. The orthography’s own examples include both я хоті́в би and я б про це розпові́в (I would talk about it) [src: pravopys-2026, §117].

Two positions, one meaning

Я хоті́в би ка́ви.
I would like some coffee.
Said by a man. After хоті́ти, ка́ви (genitive) means “some coffee”.
Я б хоті́в ка́ви.
I would like some coffee.
Said by a man. The same meaning; б follows я, which ends in a vowel.
Я хоті́ла б ка́ви.
I would like some coffee.
Said by a woman.

Wishes

The conditional of хоті́ти with an infinitive is the usual way to say I would like to…. It is softer than я хо́чу (I want).

Wishes

Я хоті́в би пої́хати до Льво́ва.
I would like to go to Lviv.
Said by a man.
Ми хоті́ли б жи́ти бі́ля мо́ря.
We would like to live by the sea.
Було́ б до́бре відпочи́ти.
It would be good to have a rest.
було́ is the neuter past of бу́ти: “it would be”.

Polite requests

The conditional makes a request less direct. Two common patterns are я хоті́в би / я хоті́ла б + infinitive (I would like to…) and Чи не могли́ б ви + infinitive (Could you…?). Могли́ is the past form of могти́ (can, to be able). Politeness has more examples.

Polite requests

Я хоті́ла б замо́вити ка́ву.
I would like to order a coffee.
Said by a woman.
Чи не могли́ б ви повтори́ти?
Could you say that again?
Formal or plural: ви.
Ви не могли́ б мені́ допомогти́?
Could you help me?
Formal or plural: ви.

Unreal conditions with якби

To talk about something that is not true, or did not happen, use якби́ (if) in the if part and the conditional in the main part [src: goroh-dictionary]. The if part also uses the past form; якби́ already contains би, so it is not repeated there.

If… would…

Якби́ я мав час, я пої́хав би до Льво́ва.
If I had time, I would go to Lviv.
Said by a man. I have no time.
Якби́ я ма́ла час, я пої́хала б до Льво́ва.
If I had time, I would go to Lviv.
Said by a woman.
Якби́ ти сказа́в мені́, я допомі́г би.
If you had told me, I would have helped.
Informal: ти, said to a man. Said by a man.
Якби́ не було́ дощу́, ми пої́хали б на мо́ре.
If it weren't raining, we would go to the seaside. / If it hadn't rained, we would have gone to the seaside.
The same form for the present and the past; context decides.

Якби́ is one word. Written apart, як би is the question word як (how) with the particle би: Як би кра́ще ви́конати це завда́ння! (How could this task best be done!) [src: pravopys-2026, §43].

Real conditions with якщо

When the condition is possible or likely, use якщо́ (if) and an ordinary tense, not the conditional. Where English uses the present after if for a future event, Ukrainian usually uses the future [src: goroh-dictionary].

If… will…

Якщо́ бу́де час, я пої́ду до Льво́ва.
If I have time, I will go to Lviv.
Literally “If there will be time…”.
Якщо́ за́втра бу́де дощ, ми бу́демо вдо́ма.
If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
Якщо́ ти хо́чеш, я допоможу́.
If you want, I will help.
Informal: ти. A condition about the present uses the present.

Щоб + past form

The conjunction щоб (so that, in order to) introduces a purpose [src: goroh-dictionary]. When the subject of both parts is the same person, it is usually followed by an infinitive. When the subject is different, the verb after щоб takes the past form, as in the conditional, but without a separate би: щоб already contains it. The same pattern reports a request or wish: Він сказа́в, щоб усі́ прийшли́. (He told everyone to come.) [src: pravopys-2026, §43].

Щоб

Я прийшо́в, щоб допомогти́.
I came to help.
Said by a man. The same person comes and helps: infinitive.
Я хо́чу, щоб ти прийшла́.
I want you to come.
Informal: ти, said to a woman. Different subjects: past form.
Вона́ сказа́ла, щоб ми зателефонува́ли.
She told us to phone.

Щоб is written as one word. Apart, що б is що (what) with the particle: Що б ви сказа́ли? (What would you say?) [src: pravopys-2026, §43].

Common mistakes and limits

Common mistake

The wrong form of the particle. After a vowel write б, after a consonant би: я хоті́ла б, я хоті́в би [src: pravopys-2026, §117].

Common mistake

Present or future after би. A verb with би is in the past form: я пої́хав би, not я пої́ду би.

Common mistake

Якби́ for a real condition. For something that may well happen, use якщо́ + future: Якщо́ бу́де час, я пої́ду.

Remember

The verb in the conditional agrees like a past-tense verb. A man says я хоті́в би, a woman says я хоті́ла б, and with ви the form is always plural: ви хоті́ли б.

Practice

Audio

The example sentences on this page are read by a computer-generated voice (OpenAI text-to-speech). The recordings are not individually checked by a listener, and a computer voice can occasionally stress or pronounce a word wrongly: the written sentence, with its stress marks, is the reference. It is not a recording of a native speaker. Nothing is downloaded until you press a listen button.
