This, that, such, all and self

The words цей (this), той (that), такий (such), весь (all) and сам (oneself) in all cases, how they agree with the noun, how це differs from цей, and сам compared with самий.

Read first:

After this page you will be able to say this book, that house, such a nice day, the whole family and I’ll do it myself in any case. You will know the full forms of цей (this), той (that), таки́й (such), уве́сь or весь (all, the whole) and сам (oneself), the difference between це and цей, and when to say той са́мий (the same).

All of these words agree with their noun in gender, number and case, just like adjectives. Adjectives in all cases explains the endings they share.

цей and той: this and that

Цей points to something near the speaker, and той to something further away. The dictionary defines цей as the opposite of той [src: goroh-dictionary].

цей and той in the nominative
MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
this, theseцейцяцеці
that, thoseтойтатеті

Agreement with the noun

Цей буди́нок стари́й.
This building is old.
буди́нок is masculine.
Ця кни́га ціка́ва.
This book is interesting.
кни́га is feminine.
Те мі́сто дале́ко.
That town is far away.
мі́сто is neuter.
Ті лю́ди — мої́ сусі́ди.
Those people are my neighbours.
Plural.

це: “this is”, “these are”

Це is also used on its own to point at something and name it: this is…, these are…, it is…. Used like this, it does not change, whatever the gender or number of the noun that follows. Compare it with цей, ця and ці, which stand directly before a noun and agree with it.

це or цей?

Це мій брат.
This is my brother.
це: “this is”. No agreement.
Це моя́ сестра́.
This is my sister.
Still це.
Це мої́ батьки́.
These are my parents.
Still це.
Ця кни́га моя́.
This book is mine.
ця agrees with кни́га.

цей in all cases

The forms below follow the spelling standard [src: pravopys-2026, §111] and the dictionary [src: goroh-dictionary]. As with adjectives, the masculine accusative is like the genitive for people and animals and like the nominative for things; the plural accusative works the same way.

цей (this) in all cases
CaseMasculineNeuterFemininePlural
Nominativeцейцецяці
Genitiveцього́цього́ціє́їцих
Dativeцьому́цьому́ційцим
Accusativeцей or цього́цецюці or цих
Instrumentalцимцимціє́юци́ми
Locativeу цьо́му (цім)у цьому (цім)у ційу цих

The dative and the locative differ only in stress: цьому́ (to this) but у цьо́му (in this). The spelling standard gives цьо́му as the locative for both masculine and neuter [src: pravopys-2026, §111]. The dictionary gives it for the masculine but цьому́ for the neuter [src: goroh-dictionary], so the neuter locative is left unmarked in the table.

той in all cases

той (that) in all cases
CaseMasculineNeuterFemininePlural
Nominativeтойтетаті
Genitiveтого́того́тіє́ї (то́ї)тих
Dativeтому́тому́тійтим
Accusativeтой or того́тетуті or тих
Instrumentalтимтимтіє́ю (то́ю)ти́ми
Locativeна то́му (тім)на то́му (тім)на тійна тих

The feminine forms то́ї and то́ю are rare; the standard gives тіє́ї and тіє́ю first [src: pravopys-2026, §111]. Цей and той have the same pattern: ціє́ї and тіє́ї, цьому́ and тому́, ци́ми and ти́ми.

Stress after a preposition

As with до ме́не on Personal pronouns in all cases, a preposition pulls the stress forward in forms such as від то́го, у цьо́го, на то́му, при цьо́му, з усьо́го, в усьо́му [src: pravopys-2026, §113, note 2].

цей and той in different cases

Я зна́ю цього́ лі́каря.
I know this doctor.
Accusative of a person: like the genitive.
Ми живемо́ в цьо́му буди́нку.
We live in this building.
Locative after в.
Да́йте, будь ла́ска, ту кни́гу.
Could you give me that book, please?
Formal or plural: да́йте is the ви form of the command. Accusative.
У цьо́го студе́нта нема́є ча́су.
This student has no time.
After у: цьо́го.
Ти зна́єш тих люде́й?
Do you know those people?
Informal: ти. Accusative plural of people: like the genitive.

такий: such, so

Таки́й means such, this kind of, or, before an adjective, so [src: goroh-dictionary]. It takes the endings of hard adjectives such as нови́й: тако́го, тако́му, таки́м, тако́ї, таки́ми [src: goroh-dictionary].

таки́й in the nominative
MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
таки́йтака́таке́такі́

таки́й

Сього́дні таки́й га́рний день!
It's such a beautiful day today!
Вона́ така́ розу́мна.
She is so clever.
така́ agrees with вона́.
Я ніко́ли не ба́чив тако́го мі́ста.
I've never seen a town like this.
Said by a man. Genitive after a negative verb.
У ме́не така́ са́ма ку́ртка.
I've got the same jacket.
One of the same kind. See сам and самий below.

весь, увесь: all, the whole

Уве́сь (also весь and ввесь) means all, the whole. In the plural, усі́ or всі also means everyone, and the neuter усе́ or все means everything. Every form has a version with у- and one with в-, chosen by the usual у/в rule [src: pravopys-2026, §113, note 1; §23].

уве́сь (all) in all cases
CaseMasculineNeuterFemininePlural

The genitive and dative masculine and neuter are left unmarked: the spelling standard stresses the ending (усього, усьому) when there is no preposition, while the dictionary stresses the stem [src: pravopys-2026, §113; goroh-dictionary]. After a preposition both stress the stem: з усьо́го, в усьо́му.

уве́сь, усі́, усе́

Я працюва́в уве́сь день.
I worked all day.
Said by a man. Accusative of time, like the nominative.
Уся́ сім’я́ вдо́ма.
The whole family is at home.
Усі́ вже тут.
Everyone is already here.
Дя́кую за все!
Thank you for everything!
все after a vowel.

сам: oneself, on one’s own

Сам (feminine сама́, plural самі́) stresses who does something or who is meant: myself, yourself, himself and so on. It can also mean alone, on one’s own [src: goroh-dictionary]. It changes like a hard adjective [src: pravopys-2026, §113, note 1]. The neuter has two forms, саме́ and само́ [src: goroh-dictionary].

сам in all cases
CaseMasculineNeuterFemininePlural
Nominativeсамсаме́, само́сама́самі́
Genitiveсамо́госамо́госамо́їсами́х
Dativeсамо́мусамо́мусамі́йсами́м
Accusativeсам or само́госаме́, само́саму́самі́ or сами́х
Instrumentalсами́мсами́мсамо́юсами́ми
Locativeу само́му (самі́м)у само́му (самі́м)у самі́йу сами́х

Сам agrees with the person it refers to. A woman says я сама́, a man я сам, a group ми самі́.

сам

Я сам зроблю́.
I'll do it myself.
Said by a man.
Я сама́ зроблю́.
I'll do it myself.
Said by a woman.
Вона́ живе́ сама́.
She lives alone.
Ми самі́ не зна́ємо.
We don't know ourselves.
Ти сам це написа́в?
Did you write this yourself?
Informal: ти, said to a man.

сам and самий

The spelling standard lists two more words alongside сам: сами́й, stressed on the ending, and са́мий, stressed on the stem, as in той са́мий [src: pravopys-2026, §113, note 1]. The dictionary treats сами́й as another form of сам [src: goroh-dictionary]. Са́мий has its own uses [src: goroh-dictionary]:

  • After той, цей or таки́й, it means the same: той са́мий (the same, the very one), таки́й са́мий (the same kind of). Usage guides recommend той са́мий rather than той же or один і той же [src: goroh-usage].
  • With a preposition and a word for a time or a place, it means the very: до са́мого ве́чора (right up until the evening).
са́мий in the nominative
MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
са́мийса́маса́меса́мі

той са́мий

Це той са́мий чолові́к.
That's the same man.
Ми живемо́ на тій са́мій ву́лиці.
We live on the same street.
Ми працюва́ли до са́мого ве́чора.
We worked right up until the evening.

Common mistakes and limits

Common mistake

Making це agree in this is. Say Це моя́ сестра́ and Це мої́ батьки́, not Ця моя́ сестра́ or Ці мої́ батьки́ when you mean this is or these are.

Common mistake

Самий for the most. Ukrainian forms the superlative with най-: найкра́щий (the best), not самий кра́щий [src: goroh-usage].

Common mistake

Той же for the same. Usage guides prefer той са́мий: Це був той са́мий хло́пець (It was the same boy) [src: goroh-usage].

Remember

Цей, той, таки́й, уве́сь and сам agree with the noun or person like adjectives. Only це in this is stays the same.

Note

The standard also lists оце́й and ото́й, emphatic forms of цей and той that change in the same way, and the rare сей [src: pravopys-2026, §111]. This page does not cover them.

Practice

Audio

The example sentences on this page are read by a computer-generated voice (OpenAI text-to-speech). The recordings are not individually checked by a listener, and a computer voice can occasionally stress or pronounce a word wrongly: the written sentence, with its stress marks, is the reference. It is not a recording of a native speaker. Nothing is downloaded until you press a listen button.
