Grammar in this text

What you order: the accusative

What you ask for is the object of the sentence, in the accusative, even when the verb is left out. Feminine nouns in -а take -у, and an adjective with them does the same: ка́ва → ка́ву, вели́ка → вели́ку.

  • Ка́ву з молоко́м, будь ла́ска. A coffee with milk, please.
  • — Вели́ку чи мале́ньку? “A large one or a small one?”

With milk, by card: the instrumental

З meaning with takes the instrumental (з молоко́м), and so does the thing you do something with, with no preposition (ка́рткою, by card).

  • Ка́ву з молоко́м, будь ла́ска. A coffee with milk, please.
  • А́нна пла́тить ка́рткою… Anna pays by card…

Prices: the noun after a number

Only the last word of a number counts. Шістдеся́т п’ять ends in five, so гри́вня is in the genitive plural: гри́вень.

  • — Шістдеся́т п’ять гри́вень. “Sixty-five hryvnias.”

English translation
