Український футбол
Футбо́л в Украї́ні ду́же лю́блять. Ді́ти гра́ють у ньо́го на шкільни́х подві́р’ях, а доро́слі ди́вляться ма́тчі на стадіо́нах, удо́ма а́бо в кафе́. Пе́рший чемпіона́т незале́жної Украї́ни відбу́вся в 1992 ро́ці, і пе́ршим чемпіо́ном ста́ла сімферо́польська «Та́врія».
Найвідо́міші клу́би краї́ни — ки́ївське «Дина́мо» і доне́цький «Шахта́р». «Дина́мо» засно́вано в 1927 ро́ці. Ще за часі́в Радя́нського Сою́зу кома́нда дві́чі виграва́ла Ку́бок володарів ку́бків — у 1975 і 1986 роках. Оби́два рази́ її́ тре́нером був Вале́рій Лобано́вський. Grammar in this text
Where: в and на with the locative
When в (у) and на mean in, at or on, the noun is in the locative. Most masculine nouns that name things take -і (на стадіо́ні); Ки́їв also changes its stem: в Ки́єві.
- Футбо́л в Украї́ні ду́же лю́блять. People in Ukraine love football very much.
- Фіна́л турні́ру відбу́вся в Ки́єві, на Олімпі́йському стадіо́ні… The final of the tournament took place in Kyiv, at the Olympic Stadium…
Two meanings of з
With the genitive, з means from or since. With the instrumental, it means with.
- «Шахта́р» — кома́нда з Доне́цька, мі́ста шахтарі́в. Shakhtar is a team from Donetsk, a city of miners.
- Уже́ з 2014 ро́ку «Шахта́р» не мо́же гра́ти в рі́дному Доне́цьку. Since 2014 Shakhtar has not been able to play in its home city of Donetsk.
- …у фіна́лі він перемі́г німе́цький «Ве́рдер» з раху́нком 2:1. …in the final it beat the German club Werder Bremen 2–1 (with a score of 2–1).
Between: між with the instrumental
Між (between) takes the instrumental. «Дина́мо» never changes its form; «Шахта́р» becomes «Шахтаре́м».
- Ма́тчі між «Дина́мо» і «Шахтаре́м» — головне́ де́рбі краї́ни. Matches between Dynamo and Shakhtar are the country's main derby.
Was founded: sentences without a subject
Ukrainian often leaves out who did something. A form in -но, or the they form with no pronoun, does the job of the English passive.
- «Дина́мо» засно́вано в 1927 ро́ці. Dynamo was founded in 1927.
- Клуб заснува́ли в 1936 ро́ці. The club was founded in 1936. (Literally: they founded the club.)
- …матч зупиня́ють, а футболі́сти йдуть в укриття́. …the match is stopped and the players go to a shelter.
Past tense: agreeing with the subject
A past-tense verb agrees with its subject in gender and number: -в for masculine (a few verbs differ, such as перемі́г), -ла for feminine, -ло for neuter, -ли for plural.
- Збі́рна Украї́ни впе́рше зігра́ла на чемпіона́ті сві́ту в 2006 ро́ці… The Ukrainian national team first played at a World Cup in 2006…
- Фіна́л турні́ру відбу́вся в Ки́єві… The final of the tournament took place in Kyiv…
- А на Євро-2020 украї́нці впе́рше дійшли́ до чвертьфіна́лу чемпіона́ту Євро́пи. And at Euro 2020 the Ukrainians reached the quarter-final of a European Championship for the first time.
English translation
People in Ukraine love football very much. Children play it in school yards, and adults watch matches at stadiums, at home or in cafés. The first championship of independent Ukraine took place in 1992, and the first champion was Tavriya Simferopol.
The country's best-known clubs are Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. Dynamo was founded in 1927. Back in the times of the Soviet Union, the team twice won the Cup Winners' Cup, in 1975 and 1986. Both times its coach was Valeriy Lobanovskyi. Two Dynamo footballers received the Golden Ball (Ballon d'Or): Oleh Blokhin in 1975 and Ihor Belanov in 1986.
Shakhtar is a team from Donetsk, a city of miners. The club was founded in 1936. In 2009 Shakhtar won the UEFA Cup: in the final it beat the German club Werder Bremen 2–1. It was the first European trophy of a Ukrainian club since 1991. Matches between Dynamo and Shakhtar are the country's main derby.
The Ukrainian national team first played at a World Cup in 2006 and went straight through to the quarter-final. In 2012 Ukraine hosted the European Championship together with Poland. The final of the tournament took place in Kyiv, at the Olympic Stadium: Spain beat Italy 4–0. And at Euro 2020 the Ukrainians reached the quarter-final of a European Championship for the first time.
The war has changed Ukrainian football a lot. Since 2014 Shakhtar has not been able to play in its home city of Donetsk. After Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian championship stopped, but it resumed in August of the same year. Ukrainian clubs play their home matches in European competitions abroad: for example, in the 2022/23 season Shakhtar played its Champions League home matches in Warsaw. If an air-raid alert sounds during a game, the match is stopped and the players go to a shelter. For many people today, football is not only a game but also proof that life goes on.
